Date: 15th to 17th Jun -

The Dean Forest Railway proudly introduces its new annual series of steam gala events – ‘The Royal Forest of Steam’. Each year we aim to bring a quality, all-steam weekend with plenty to see and do.

This year, ‘The Royal Forest of Steam’ will run over the weekend of the 15th – 17th June. You can expect to see an intensive service including freight – why not take a trip on the brake van for a unique view of the scenery, or to see the locomotive working hard at close quarters?

We are excited to welcome BR Ivatt 2MT Tank no. 41312 to the Forest, courtesy of the Watercress Line. This locomotive spent the majority of its working life on the Southern Region, being stationed at Faversham, Barnstaple, Brighton and Bournemouth (to name a few!). We look forward to seeing her perform alongside our resident Prairie tank no. 5541 and Austerity no. 152 ‘Rennes’.

Our planned second visitor, 'Portbury', will unfortunately not be joining us, but in its place we will be joined by the Austerity 75008 'Swiftsure.

Built in 1943 by the Hunslet Engine Co. for the MOD, the loco was delivered to the War Department Depot at Burton Dassett in Warwickshire. The loco was sold into industrial use in the 1970's and finished up at Cadley Hill Coillery (one of the last coal pits to use steam power) at the end of the 1980's.

Sold into preservation, the loco has visited various railways including the Bodmin & Wenford and East Lancs and is currently based at the Nene Valley Railway.

Alongside our intensive timetable, there will be a host of other attractions on offer. The first of these is a model railway exhibition, courtesy of the Forest of Dean Model Railway Club. Rumour has it that an N gauge model of Parkend will be on display.
